Stylish Fall Outfits for Your Next Family Photo Session

It can be a little bit daunting to have to pick out outfits for the whole family, and then on top of that, they should look good in the setting and coordinate somewhat. It can also be somewhat of a challenge when considering toddlers, things that may get messy, may be stained, or may not be sitting right with a kid running around.

Here are 23 outfits for cooler fall weather that are stylish and easy to have the whole family in.

1. Forest Green, Cinnamon, and Dark Denim

We often see dark navy, dark green, and then usually a darker red like a burgundy or a maroon as coordinating colors. However, here it’s more of a cinnamon burnt orange color, which is very fall, and these three colors together make a great color palette. I like that the whole family has on brown leather shoes. They are not exactly the same shoes, but the brown leather definitely is coordinating throughout.

If we wanted to make this a little bit brighter, I could see maybe a little bit of cream somewhere. We could do a cream tight for the little girl, we could have maybe an accessory somewhere, or maybe the mom could have a lighter colored jacket, maybe a denim jacket as well. We could throw in just one other pop of color while the base of this outfit is still the forest green, cinnamon, and then the navy, which is in the dark denim and also her dress.

2. Navy, Marigold, and Soft Gray

Here we have a little bit more color going on. We have the soft gray, marigold, and then again the navy, which is in the sweater and the denim. We also have the cream in her shoes and the pops of white from the bottoms of the shoes and from the t-shirt that the little girl is wearing.

Those are really small attributes, just a tiny pop of white, but a photo is a little bit different than an everyday outfit coordination. It’s something that’s going to be sitting still, so the colors that you’re seeing in that still frame are a little bit more important, even the small flecks of color.

3. Plum, Charcoal, and Warm Taupe

I love warm taupe. I love all variations of taupe, actually. Here the kids are in taupe and brown, which I really like. I think it’s flattering. It feels a little bit more mature than how we often see the kids wearing brighter colors and the parents a little bit toned down.

I like that the mom has a darker, richer color here. It feels bold and fashionable for her while she’s not getting lost anywhere.

The shoes are coordinating. They’re all definitely the same color. That’s usually the safest bet, to coordinate color and texture in shoes. There are certain situations in which the texture does not have to be the same. Here, because the suede and the corduroy of the overalls are so similar, it makes sense to have the little girl wearing a suede shoe.

4. Rust, Chambray, and Chocolate Brown

This is a little bit bigger of a family photo. I like that they chose to have some pattern going on even though there are more people in this photo. The stripes are coordinating, but they are not exactly the same. That is my favorite, when you’re not exactly matching but there is definitely coordination going on intentionally.

Here the kids are wearing sneakers and the adults have the leather shoes on. We could have everyone wearing leather shoes, but sneakers make sense in this situation, and they aren’t drawing too much attention away from the symmetry of the outfits together.

5. Deep Teal, Oatmeal, and Tobacco Brown

If you are doing a photo shoot in the fall, you might as well lean into the colder weather aesthetic with cute accessories like the hats that we’re seeing here. Everyone is wearing matching leather shoes and a little beanie that are not matching in color but definitely in texture. It brings everyone together into the same aesthetic.

The color palette is somewhat simple but not too simple. We have the cream, which makes the mom pop, and then the color for the little boy, and then something sleek and mature for the dad here.

6. Burgundy, Blush, and Washed Black

What stands out the most to me is the blush. I like that we have a little bit of pattern, floral pattern, with the girl’s outfit. A floral and a cardigan go very nicely together, as do the cream tights, adding a little bit of lightness overall. We also have the color washing with the blush in the little boy’s outfit. It feels simple but a little bit bold.

It makes sense for a photo shoot, and I think for photo shoots you can almost get away with outfits that you might not necessarily wear every day. Here it’s clear that this is for the photo. The little boy might not wear this outfit to school, but it looks very intentional and fashionable and eye-appealing for the photo as a whole, combined with all the other outfits.

7. Olive, Cream, and Classic Denim

Here again we have a simple color palette. Everyone is generally wearing somewhat casual upscale outfits. I think that we do have a little bit of simplistic colors again, which makes sense for a photo shoot.

For example, there’s the green of the girl’s sweatshirt and her leggings. You might not think to wear a hoodie during a photo shoot, but when it’s coordinating like this, it feels less casual. Since it almost looks like the kids are wearing a uniform because they are matching, it doesn’t feel like athletic wear, and it feels more intentional and upscale.

8. Lavender, Soft Olive, and Honey Brown

The colors here are definitely coordinating with the environment, while the lavender is giving a little bit of a pop. If it were me, I would love to be the mom who gets to wear the pop of color, and I think it makes sense for my husband to go a little more low-key with the field jacket and the full brown base.

I love the pop of yellow as well, and that the girl is wearing the cozy little UGG boots. Simple details like that do make the whole photo feel a little bit cozier than if she were wearing maybe a Mary Jane or something that would be cute but wouldn’t feel as much like fall weather.

9. Mustard, Eggplant, and Dark Wash Denim

Looking at the little boy in this photo, these are the first athletic sneakers that we have seen with these family photos. I think that athletic or everyday sneakers can work for a family photo as long as there are other parts of the outfit that are a little bit more dressed up.

In this case, the sneakers bring a little personality to his outfit and to the group as a whole. Because they are the only athletic sneakers, they work. No one else is wearing athletic wear or loungewear, so the group still looks polished and put together, with one small touch of personality in the sneakers.

10. Cranberry, Camel, and Indigo

This has a little bit of a neutrals focus, with the little girl’s beanie and the cardigan. I could almost see her wearing a white t-shirt underneath. Same with the mom. I like the cranberry throughout.

However, if they wanted to, they could throw in white in a couple places to make the color palette a little bit brighter, maybe a white t-shirt for the mom or a white t-shirt for the boy. I do like the cranberry combined with the indigo of the dad’s jacket, so I wouldn’t change that.

11. Black, Merlot, and Soft Tan

The all black base of the dad’s outfit is very sleek and grounding for the rest of the outfits. The little girl wearing the sweatpants is somewhat unexpected for the family photo, but it almost feels like she’s going to school. She also has a backpack on, which is unexpected for a family photo, but it adds a lot of context and personality.

We usually don’t think to keep accessories like this in our photos. However, adding in a little bit of the daily life can add a lot of depth and story to the photo. If you were looking back at this photo years from now, it would bring immediately to mind the stage of life that she was in.

12. Sage, Terracotta, and Faded Denim

I really like the denim on denim with the light gray t-shirt. Instead of being a white t-shirt, the light gray keeps this from being the focal point of the family photo. We have a little bit of a wider color palette here with the cream, denim, charcoal, sage, and terracotta. It’s a wider but still almost pastel fall color palette.

Again, the boy’s shoes add a little bit of personality, but as a whole no one is wearing anything too casual, so it still feels polished and okay to print out for a family photo.

13. Cobalt, Caramel, and Heather Gray

I like that the daughter and dad are the ones coordinating outfits here. They have the crewneck sweatshirts on, matching shoes, and then the jeans. It makes sense that they are in the center of the photo with their coordinating outfits, and then the two ends are also matching and flanking the sides.

There’s not much color going on here, but I think that when we have the classic colors like brown and blue in denim, it makes sense to keep the color palette small.

14. Dusty Rose, Espresso, and Moss Green

The rose color here, rather than being a brighter pink, definitely feels more like a fall, cooler weather outfit. Her midi dress is a great fit while also being pretty warm. She doesn’t need to have any jacket over this.

The same goes for the beanie outfit. The beanie is adding a little bit of warmth, and nothing else needs to be added on top.

15. Burnt Orange, Deep Teal, and Navy

Teal, orange, and navy are not exactly a classic color combination, but for a fall photo it definitely makes sense. The navy and the orange offset each other nicely. We have the warmer colors and the cooler colors.

Teal and navy alone would not go too well together, but in combination with the orange and the yellow, it feels like it makes more sense.

16. Heather Gray, Berry, and Dark Olive

The outfits for the kids here are definitely a little bit more casual and realistic for children’s wear. The dad is also wearing a quilted, almost athletic material vest, so together it is casual, but since everyone is coordinating colors, it doesn’t feel unplanned.

The little pop of the berry color combined with the dark olive feels intentional for fall. It feels warm, with a little bit of personality, while being everyday and somewhat upscale because of the knits and the high-quality materials.

17. Evergreen Plaid, Ruby, and Denim

Plaid is definitely a go-to for fall outfits. The plaid and the denim here make sense. I love a little quilted jacket on a baby or a kid, especially with the little pop of plaid underneath. The mom’s straight denim is very flattering while being relaxed.

Overall, each person’s outfit shares the same general look, which is the goal. The shoes don’t match, but the materials coordinate and the leather is the same color, which matters. That shared detail ties the photo together while each person wears a different outfit.

18. Garnet, Spruce, and Pewter Gray

We have a very outdoorsy athletic shoe on the child here. Everyone has coordinating colors. Again, it’s the same rich fall color palette that we’ve been seeing.

It’s brown leather accessories, gray tones, and rich burgundy, and then either a dark green or a somewhat lighter green. In this case, it’s a medium green, which is the classic color palette that we’ve been seeing.

19. Wine, Charcoal, and Goldenrod

Big pop of color with the goldenrod here. I think it just goes to show that you can have a random pop of color and it still looks very intentional. The wine color and then the goldenrod are not at all similar, but with the charcoal base, it really makes sense as a whole.

Also, everyone is again wearing the brown leather shoes. That is what brings it all together. We have the navy in the denim, but then overall it’s a pretty colorful palette.

20. Pine, Brick Red, and Navy Flannel

This is a somewhat bigger group. We usually see groups of three or four, but a bigger group gives you room for more colors and more textures. The setting here is outdoorsy. Fall family photos are usually taken outside, and the intention is to bring that time of year into the photo.

It feels cozy. It gives us the opportunity to add in accessories, like we see with the girl’s mittens and hat. The brick red is a good pop of color that definitely changes the whole color palette. If we didn’t have that bright color, we might lose the group of people into the background a little bit, but having brightness in certain areas brings forward the whole family.

21. Apple Red, Denim, and Moss Green

Again, think the classic blue, green, and red when you are not sure what to wear. Blue, green, and red are very flattering on everyone. Even here we can see that the mom, the dad, and the child don’t exactly have the same skin tone, but blue, green, and red look good on everyone, especially in a fall environment.

We have brown leather accents. We do have a casual sneaker for the boy. I think it makes sense in this situation, and it usually works when the kid is the one wearing the more casual sneaker rather than one of the parents. For the parents, it can look a little bit too casual, but for a child it makes more sense.

22. Emerald, Charcoal, and Copper

This is a slight variation of the blue, green, and red that we’ve been seeing. There’s actually no blue here, but charcoal instead. Charcoal is a good color to use because it does lend itself easily to the more natural or even more pastel colors.

Again, the little boy is the one wearing the sneakers. It makes sense here because they are in the same color family as the black shoes that everyone else is wearing.

We have seen in the past the boys wearing the charcoal or black color bases and then the mom and the daughter having a pop of color. I think it’s a nice asymmetrical look. It feels intentional, and it feels fashionable to have something asymmetrical that doesn’t look unplanned.

23. Indigo, Saffron, and Walnut Brown

Here is a cool color with a very warm color, all in textures that make sense for fall. We have denim, we have corduroy, we have chunky knit, and a field vest with a little bit of a corduroy collar. Quilting is very great for fall. It feels durable.

The leather boots and the leather sneakers that the little boy is wearing work well. I like that the only non-leather shoe is the blue denim. That makes sense because it’s a color wash for her outfit. It doesn’t necessarily pop out because it is a full wash of navy for her outfit, aside from the mustard beanie, which matches well with everyone else’s pops of orange as well as the background.
