Some of us have a hard time putting together a boho chic outfit because the boho aspect doesn’t always resonate. However, when you see a piece that definitely reads bohemian, the key is to combine it with other, more simple pieces to get the boho chic aesthetic.
This way you’re leaning into the chic portion of boho chic, without looking exactly like you’re working at the Renaissance fair.
1. Floral Maxi Dress, Denim Jacket, and Tan Ankle Boots

The floral pattern is definitely a staple in boho chic. This combination is a great way to keep it toned down and not lean too bohemian, while definitely feeling a little artistic and romantic. The amount of print that’s showing here is doing most of the work.
While a suede boot definitely feels slightly bohemian, together the outfit is pretty simple. There aren’t too many accessories adding noise.
2. Crochet Top, High-Waisted Flares, and Woven Sandals

The woven sandals are very understated. They almost look like they have a gold tinge to them. They feel modern while still making sense in combination with the other bohemian aspects.
A long crochet top is a good piece for really any season. It combines well with other layers while also being breathable. Crochet and flare denim isn’t too eccentric or unexpected, while definitely giving a 70s feel that just makes sense together.
3. Embroidered Peasant Blouse, Straight Jeans, and Layered Gold Necklaces

Embroidered blouses like this are never going to go out of style. They’re timeless, while still feeling elegant and fresh every time you see them. The fit here is easy. The straight jeans help balance out the looser top, and the leather sandals feel bohemian in the most modern way.
She could even play up different aspects of this outfit with more accessories, maybe even a hat. There’s not too much going on, so the boho chic could be played up even more.
4. Suede Fringe Vest, White Tee, and Denim Cutoffs

Fringe has been having a moment recently, and the fringe vest is definitely a statement. I like that it’s combined here with just a plain white tee and simple denim cutoffs.
A suede vest can definitely trap heat, so something a little bit shorter like the denim cutoffs makes sense for summertime. You’re not going to be too hot, even in a suede top.
5. Tiered Prairie Skirt, Fitted Tank, and Leather Sandals

The prairie skirt here is an iteration of the classic white tiered skirt that we’ve been seeing for the past few years. The plain tank that she has could be a t-shirt, or it could be a long sleeve shirt. This outfit could work in several different situations. What’s important is to make sure that there aren’t too many conflicting patterns going on. She has a little bit of texture with the bag, and the movement of the skirt complements it well without feeling like there’s too much noise.
Boots also work well with a skirt of this length. I think a tall boot, maybe in a suede or a leather, definitely fits the material criteria for boho chic, and she doesn’t have too much going on, so a boot would still make sense whether or not she accessorized more.
6. Printed Kimono Duster, Black Cami, and Wide-Leg Trousers

This looks so easy and elegant, while definitely having interest and romance. I like that it’s a lace trimmed cami with the pattern that she has. I think it looks a little bit better lace trimmed than if it were just a black tank top, especially with the looser fitting pants.
The printed kimono duster is definitely a statement piece, but it doesn’t feel like she tried too hard because of the plain black base that she has on. I’m not sure that it could be workwear, but you could definitely wear this in any other situation. It feels summery and chic.
7. Wide-Brim Felt Hat, Cream Sweater Dress, and Knee Boots

A sweater dress and knee boots are a great fall combination. With a simple color palette like this, you can go for a bigger, bolder move like the wide brim felt hat. Felt is a structured material that doesn’t give away too easily, and it combines nicely with the rest of the hardworking materials in this outfit.
She could also throw a lace trimmed tall sock underneath the boot, and I think this outfit would look just a little bit cuter.
8. Patchwork Denim, Cream Blouse, and Turquoise Jewelry

With something as bold as patchwork denim, our initial thought is to play down the rest as much as possible, and that’s definitely the case here. I think the boots being a brown leather makes sense. They don’t add too much noise.
The turquoise jewelry is somewhat unexpected, but the blues kind of bring your eye up from the patchwork denim. They almost complement each other, and the turquoise doesn’t stand out as much as another color might. In this situation, it definitely makes sense. If she didn’t feel like wearing both the earrings and the necklace, I would keep the necklace because of the cut of the shirt. You could either go with smaller earrings that don’t compete with the necklace, or no earrings.
Usually with something high-waisted with such a flare, you do want to tuck in the shirt, but I think in this situation the shirt could also go untucked and the silhouette wouldn’t be compromised.
9. Linen Jumpsuit, Braided Belt, and Espadrilles

Here’s a more toned down version of boho chic. It’s definitely boho because of the colors and the braided aspects. Espadrilles are casual and easygoing, and combined with this color, they feel summery.
If she wanted to play up the boho aspect, she could wear some gold bangles. She already has a gold earring. Layered gold necklaces would also look great here with the simple silhouette that she has going.
10. Off-Shoulder Blouse, Denim Midi Skirt, and Wooden Bangles

The brown and denim look great with the wooden bangles. If you have wooden bangles in your closet, summer and spring are definitely the seasons to be wearing them. The off-the-shoulder top is very boho chic. Even in a simple color like the off-white that she has here, it feels summery and romantic.
With an off-the-shoulder top, we have the inclination to wear a necklace to compensate for the amount of skin that’s showing, but I like that she chose not to wear a necklace here and instead left the wooden bangles to accessorize by themselves.
11. Crochet Cardigan, Ivory Slip Dress, and Ankle Boots

A crochet cardigan in long form like this is definitely a statement piece. With a statement piece like this one, I feel like I would instinctively reach for a pair of blue jeans and maybe a neutral colored t-shirt, like white, beige, or even a darker color. But I love the unexpected twist of the slip dress. For some reason this just makes sense, even though it’s satin against crochet and there’s actually a belt on top of both of them. I think the way that it’s fitted is casual enough that it doesn’t look like too much is going on.
The boho part of the boho chic here is definitely the crochet, maybe a little bit the leather belt, and then the ankle boots are somewhat boho chic, but not a ton. This is a great unexpected, and kind of pared down, boho chic outfit.
12. Paisley Maxi Skirt, Tucked White Tee, and Flat Sandals

Paisley is such a forgotten about pattern in my book. I think of paisley as a pashmina scarf that you might be wearing in the wintertime or during rave season, but we don’t often see paisley in any format other than pashmina, unless you count a paisley bandana, which I would not count as the same pattern. This is a traditional paisley pattern.
Here it’s in skirt form, and it’s a good choice to tone it down with a white t-shirt. I could also see a black t-shirt here. You could really do any other color, but I think the white brightens up the otherwise dark color palette. A navy might look good, maybe even a dark red, depending on which colors look best on you.
13. Shearling Vest, Ribbed Turtleneck, and Flared Jeans

Shearling doesn’t look boho on its own, but paired with the flared jeans, this outfit is definitely boho chic. I also feel like when we add gold jewelry rather than silver, boho chic comes to mind more readily for some reason. That’s not to say that you can’t wear boho chic with silver jewelry, but I think more often it’s gold.
Here the shearling vest is sleeveless, which is nice for transitional shoulder seasons, rather than a thicker shearling coat for the dead of winter.
14. Rust Corduroy Midi Skirt, Cream Knit, and Tall Boots

Corduroy is a good boho material. It doesn’t necessarily read boho unless it’s in a warmer, more unexpected color like this that feels boho in a 70s kind of way. I think if it’s green or orange, it feels a little bit more boho than your natural brown corduroy, which can still be boho, but not automatically. A corduroy midi skirt like this is more of a statement piece, which is more inherent to a boho chic style. If it were denim, it could read more minimalist than boho.
I like the way that she paired the calf length boots with this midi skirt. The small amount of skin that’s showing has a sheer black tight over it, which is a good choice, rather than keeping it exposed and having to deal with three different colors in such a small area.
15. Gauze Cover-Up, Simple Swimsuit, and a Straw Tote

This is such a chic outfit, and I feel like a huge gauze cover-up like this gets so much use in the short amount of time that we’re able to use it during the summer. She’s reminding me of Calypso from the Odyssey movie. This material just feels like you could be living at the beach and the sand isn’t bothering you at all.
You’re one with nature, in a beachy way though, because the gauze wouldn’t hold up running through the forest.
16. Velvet Blazer, Ditsy Floral Dress, and Ankle Boots

Here we have another midi length floral dress. I like describing it as ditsy because the print is very busy and very feminine, in a good way. The blazer makes it look more polished and a little bit less trad wife, and I think what’s making it feel boho here is the color green combined with the floral. Rather than a neutral color, she chose green, which is definitely a statement.
The little leather accents are chic, and in general I think this outfit could be appropriate to wear almost anywhere. It could be casual, it could be professional. It works for most anything.
17. Embroidered Denim Jacket, Black Maxi Dress, and Boots

Why do I feel like we forgot about embroidered jackets? There used to be a time when I saw way more embroidered jackets for sale. I also remember people putting pins all over their denim jackets, like the pins with a saying on them or a band’s face, which is boho more in a band groupie kind of way rather than Renaissance.
But embroidery is always chic, and paying attention to details like embroidery does is never going to go out of style. I think we see embroidery more on white cotton summer pieces, but embroidery on a denim jacket actually stands the test of time longer. It’s a little bit more of a busy detail that should get the attention, so it’s nice to pare back everything else like she’s doing here, with the plain black dress and simple leather accessories. It’s a nice color palette that draws attention to the embroidery.
18. Small Floral Wrap Dress, Suede Boots, and a Braided Belt

Here we have the same floral dress idea, this time in a wrap version. Wrap is inherently a little bit more feminine than even just a v-neck would be. It has the opening on the top front as well as the bottom. It’s almost like a slit in front because of the wrap, showing a little more skin, but the silhouette is also just flowing, like the tulip scalloped edge in the front, which makes it feel a little bit more feminine.
Here she’s not wearing a jacket, although as we saw before, a blazer works and denim looks great with floral. If it were much colder outside, a long line wool jacket would look great. With suede boots like this, it’s sometimes hard to put tights on underneath. If it’s a brown boot, I could imagine a sheer tight in brown or black, but I can’t say that it would be better than what she has going right now.
19. Chunky Knit Cardigan, Linen Shorts, and Slide Sandals

I love shorts and a tank top underneath a long cardigan. It feels like you rolled out of bed and wanted to be cozy, so you put on the coziest, biggest cardigan that you had around.
Here it’s boho in a little bit of a coastal way because she’s at the beach, but the sandals are minimalist and the tank top is minimalist too. There are no patterns in our face, but it feels so cozy, and the knit of the cardigan is chunky and easygoing. It feels boho chic in a more chic than boho way.
20. Palazzo Pants, Fitted Bodysuit, and Layered Necklaces

The palazzo pants are very flowy here and very comfortable. They don’t have a ton of close fit, but the tight tank top makes up for that. I think a black tank top is often the top of choice for the small top, big bottoms look. Whenever you’re doing small top, big bottoms, the bottoms are usually the statement piece, and it ends up being either a white or a black tank top on top.
Layered gold necklaces give this outfit more of a boho look. She could add a few bangles or go bigger with the necklaces, and a statement necklace would also work well here.
21. Peasant Dress, Wide Leather Belt, and Suede Boots

This is a boho chic outfit through and through. Suede is a classic boho material, and a peasant dress feels like Free People. The color itself isn’t especially bohemian, but the cut and fit are, particularly without the belt. Without the belt, the dress would hang looser, which would push it even further toward a bohemian look.
The belt, especially a thick one like this done at the waist, matches great with the color of the boots. I love the addition of the simple gold hoops here. She’s not going completely minimalist in jewelry. She’s not afraid to go full boho with this outfit, but it reads very chic. There’s no necklace here despite the v-neck, which keeps the noise to a minimum, as does the fairly simple color palette. All of this points us towards chic, even though it’s very breezy and bohemian.
22. Fringed Poncho, Slim Jeans, and Riding Boots

I often forget about fringe ponchos. I feel like this is another remnant of the pre-2016 era. No one has forgotten about riding boots, though, and I feel like they don’t go out of style. Maybe they never get to the point where people are wearing them so much that they’re oversaturated. A riding boot always looks good, especially now that slimmer cut jeans are back. I think a riding boot is cute, without question.
The fringe poncho is a huge statement. I like the colors here. If you didn’t want to fully commit to this statement, you could go with a black or even a gray. A navy would be cute. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a navy poncho, but navy would also be cute.
23. Lace Blouse, High-Waisted Denim, and a Fringe Crossbody

Lace doesn’t necessarily hit us right away as bohemian, and I think here it’s like a romantic go-between for the suede in the shoes and the bag and the rest of the otherwise simple outfit.
Fringe is so trendy, and I feel like a bag is the easiest way to dip your toes into the fringe trend. A fringe bag is very easy to find and very easy to wear.
24. Batik Wrap Skirt, Ribbed Tank, and Flat Sandals

A skirt like this tied around the waist is always very fashion forward. It makes sense to have a simple top like she does here, in a light color, keeping it very summery.
You can also do this with a smaller version of the skirt, almost like a silk scarf, and when we’re doing that, it could be a swim cover-up. It could also be a silk scarf tied around the waist over a trouser or a jean.
25. Oversized Denim Shirt, White Cotton Dress, and Sneakers

This is one of the simplest and easiest ways to do boho chic. This is definitely less boho than some of the other options that we’ve seen, if your aesthetic is more clean girl coastal than bohemian. The tiered skirt definitely reads romantic and somewhat eccentric, without making too much noise.
26. Shearling-Trimmed Afghan Coat, Maxi Dress, and Tall Boots

The shearling, being a natural animal fiber, adds a lot to this being bohemian coded. Also, this jacket is definitely a statement piece, and we see the embroidery, which is also very bohemian.
Having the maxi dress underneath, which is almost a little bit summery while still being a neutral color, adds interest to the outfit with the contrasting fabrics, while still keeping the base neutral.
27. Striped Linen Dress, Straw Hat, and Leather Slides

A striped linen dress like this is a great piece to keep in the summer and in the fall. It can even come out in the spring with a little sweater on top or a thicker jacket. Long boots would also look good here, as long as they came up past her calf. I think not adding too many other lines below the calf would be good with the stripe that we already have.
The simple sandal looks great, and she could maybe also do a ballet flat. A straw hat like this is a great piece for its utility in the summer. I’ve also seen straw ones that look more like a bucket hat that a lot of people have been wearing this last summer, and perhaps in the summers to come as well.
28. Tan Suede Mini Skirt, Cream Sweater, and Over-the-Knee Boots

The cream sweater is working hard again. It’s a great way to lighten up any outfit. Here we have two different color suedes, and as we said earlier, suede is a bohemian fabric whenever it appears in an outfit. I like that the outfit goes from lighter colors to darker at the bottom. It makes it easy for the eye to understand the different color suedes, and especially with an over the knee boot like this, I think the fabrics make sense.
Over the knee boots can sometimes get a bad reputation, whether or not you think the trend was oversaturated in years past and have a hard time getting over that. I think we’re far enough away from the overpopulation of over the knee boots that it’s time to start wearing them again.
