Athleisure is great because you can wear comfortable clothing and you don’t have to put much thought into pressing anything or making sure everything is unwrinkled before you head out. It takes that work out, because you can wear workout or even lounge clothing out of the house.

The one thing is that it’s still important to look put together in some way, but if you do it correctly it doesn’t have to look too casual or frumpy. You can look like you made a little bit of effort while still being completely comfortable.

    1. Matching Ribbed Set: Leggings and Longline Bra

This is essentially a workout set, both pieces ribbed, a matching set in the same color. It’s great because you could wear it to a workout class or out to get coffee, and it looks more athletic than if you were wearing loungewear as athleisure. Here she has a lighter colored sweater and white sneakers that match.

I think long slouchy socks or no-show socks like she’s wearing here could work. This is nice because you can throw a jacket over it, or even a sheer sweater or t-shirt, and the matching set underneath kind of pulls everything together.

    2. Oversized Crewneck, Biker Shorts, and Sneakers

This one is versatile because you could have an athletic top underneath, or a nicer collared shirt, but you’re comfortable since you’re wearing the biker shorts. Whether you’re going to work out, or you were just lounging around the house before and that’s why you’re in athleisure, it looks put together but also comfortable.

It’s important to wear a longer sock in this situation. With the shorts it just makes sense, especially with a bigger, chunkier athletic shoe, or even a smaller flat athletic shoe, a longer sock looks better with shorts like these. Biker shorts combined with a sweatshirt or a pullover that goes past the butt is nice, because there’s more coverage and you don’t feel like you’re showing as much when you’re wearing a tight short. You can wear a long t-shirt or a long sweater, and it feels casual but not too revealing.

    3. Quarter-Zip Pullover, Flare Leggings, and Chunky Sneakers

The star of the show here is definitely the flare leggings. It’s an original yoga pant, definitely athleisure, but it almost feels like you could be going somewhere other than a workout. The quarter-zip also looks put together because of the collar, versus if you were to wear a hood or a crew neck.

Here she’s wearing chunky sneakers, but really this outfit could look good with a wide variety of sneakers or shoes in general. You could wear a flip-flop, flat sneakers, or even a boot if you want to make it look a step more polished. The flare pants would be forgiving of a boot, or even something like a loafer.

    4. Cropped Hoodie, High-Waist Joggers, and Slides

Here she’s wearing gray joggers, which are kind of the most classic form of sweatpants. With the ruching at the bottom, they’re generally always flattering. The white socks and the gray pants go well together since they’re both a classic. With the white socks, you could even add a loafer, that would look good especially with the ruching, the cinched joggers at the bottom.

It’s important that the top is cropped here, because the joggers are high waist. It gives her more of a waist than if she wore a longer t-shirt or sweatshirt, which would give a boxier, more casual, more leisurely feel. This outfit is also nice because you could put a blazer or a heavier jacket over it, and it would feel like an outfit and not just like you rolled out of bed.

    5. Longline Sports Bra, Matching Leggings, and Zip Jacket

Here the intentionality of the outfit definitely comes from the color coordination. She has the matching set, which will always be color coordinated, but then she also has matching accessories, shoes, jacket, and bag.

You can see how she could swap out any of those, the bag, the jacket, or the shoes, for a different pair and it would still look cohesive. She could change the shoes or the jacket to dress it up a little, and it would all still go together and maybe look a bit more ready to do other things in the day after a workout. Again, a jacket with a collar for some reason looks more put together than a hood, even though this jacket is definitely athleisure. The collar gives it a little more sophisticated feel.

    6. Oversized Graphic Tee, Bike Shorts, and Platform Sneakers

Here is another biker short with an oversized top, like the sweatshirt we saw earlier, but here she’s pulled it into a knot in the front, which almost feels like accessorizing even though it’s still just the same t-shirt. She still has coverage because it’s oversized, it just gives a little more shape in the front because of the knot.

She’s wearing platform sneakers, which make the low sock okay, otherwise I would say her sock should be a little higher if it were a regular sneaker or flat shoe. The knot here really makes the outfit, because she doesn’t really have many other accessories going on.

      7. Seamless Set: Tank and Flare Leggings

This one is great because it’s not a cropped sports bra like we usually see, which is how most sets come. That’s great if you’re actively working out, but if you’re trying to make it seem less leisurely and less athletic and more of a casual set, I like the mid-length top here.

Love the flare leggings, especially with the high waist. Usually a lower waist would be more flattering, but here it goes well with the mid crop she has, and since it’s a matching set it looks great. The denim jacket and white sneakers are both a classic. The white sneaker matches well with the taupe bag, which is a similar color to the set she’s wearing, while not feeling like a completely neutral outfit because of the blue denim, and denim usually matches well with lighter colors.

When wearing flare leggings like this, or yoga pants, it’s important that they don’t go much shorter than they are here in the picture. It almost looks a little too short, so she shouldn’t go any shorter than this for the hem. As much as possible it should almost kiss the ground, but that’s not always the most comfortable, so I think this is a good length. Any shorter would not be ideal.

      8. Half-Zip Sweatshirt, Straight-Leg Sweatpants, and Retro Sneakers

She’s also wearing a cream beanie that matches the sneakers. I think the cream beanie could go well with really any color shoe here, especially since the navy top and bottom are matching.

Navy is such a great color, and I think it’s underused. People usually reach for black, sometimes more neon or pastel, especially with athleisure and workout clothes, but navy is a great, rich color that doesn’t really feel like athletic wear. It’s a great lounge basic that can be combined with many other colors and still look refined.

      9. Ribbed Tank, Wide-Leg Lounge Pants, and Sneakers

The wide leg lounge pants are wide throughout, they’re not really flare, they’re more straight. She’s wearing lounge, not necessarily athletic wear, it’s still leisure. The sneakers and the tank are lounge while not super athletic. The long cardigan is open and knit, which is comfortable but also gives more coverage and almost a 90s feel.

The bag and the suitcase aren’t necessarily matching, but everything being warm neutrals, it makes sense together.

      10. Track Jacket, Matching Track Pants, and Sneakers

Here the top and bottom are matching, but it’s not the undermost layer matching with the bottoms, it’s the jacket. So she could put a different color underneath rather than white, which definitely goes, but if you wanted something more vibrant you could put a colored tank underneath. You could do black, although with the black bag you might want to change the white sneaker if it’s going to be black on top and white on bottom.

She could also change the shoe. I think a darker shoe might look good here as well, especially if she was changing the tank top.

      11. Sports Bra, Bike Shorts, and Oversized Button-Down

Here the biker shorts are back again, but this time she’s wearing a low shoe with a no-show sock. It definitely feels more summery with a no-show sock, which is nice if it’s hot outside.

The top is open too, so rather than wearing a sweatshirt or a long oversized t-shirt, she has a matching set underneath, which gives a put-together feel and also coverage, because it’s covering her back like we saw with the other biker shorts outfits, while still being open in the front for warmer weather or if she wanted to show her waist more.

I think with biker shorts it makes sense to have something longer, it just gives more coverage. If you’re walking down the street, you don’t feel like people are looking at your butt if you have something covering it, especially since it’s short and tight.

      12. Cropped Zip-Up, Leggings, and Air-Cushion Sneakers

Here she’s wearing an all black, charcoal outfit, all dark colors except for her canvas grocery bag. I think a black sneaker is so great and looks good with many outfits, although it does darken any outfit you wear them with. So wearing all black like this does look put together, and the black sneakers will always pull the outfit together.

That said, if you don’t want them to overpower a lighter outfit, I think you should save the black sneakers for darker outfits like this, that already look put together because it’s all a dark shade. Her cropped zip jacket is collared and is the perfect crop for the rise of the leggings she’s wearing.

      13. Sweater-Knit Joggers Set and Slip-On Sneakers

This is one of the more polished, refined athleisure lounge choices you can make for an outfit. The knit cream lounge top with matching knit sweater bottoms looks so comfortable but also polished, and not at all like you didn’t try.

It’s important to have a light shoe when you have a top and bottom in a soft color and a soft material. I think the taupe shoe she’s wearing looks great, and it has white rubber bottoms which help tie it in and make it a little lighter. I don’t think she should wear any black or darker shoe with this, I think lighter is better. And I don’t think the knit lounge set is going out of style anytime soon.

        14. Athletic Dress with Built-In Shorts and Sneakers

The athletic dress is a great choice because it feels like athletic wear but doesn’t feel like you’re necessarily going to work out. It’s a dress, so it looks summery and put together, while also having shorts underneath, which make it reasonable to go to the park with your kids or your dog. The light sneakers here work because of her light bag.

You could really wear any kind of shoe, since the ensemble on top is all one color and there aren’t even many varying textures, it’s just one dress. We saw a lot of these maybe five years ago, and I think now we’re seeing a lot less, but it still always looks good. It’s almost better now that it’s not hyper trendy, you could wear this and it doesn’t feel like you’re trying too hard.

        15. Windbreaker, Leggings, and Trail Sneakers

A windbreaker is always a great option when thinking about athleisure. It looks sporty but also serves a purpose, it looks utility, as do the trail sneakers. I think trail sneakers are so cute and trendy right now, however they can be hard to find a use for if you’re walking around the city. So if you have nature by your house, or you’re out walking on the trails, a trail sneaker looks great and is always very practical.

The black top and black bottom, the coordinated base here, makes sense. You could really wear any sort of top under it, you could wear jeans with this, or a colored top, or a white top. Trail and outdoor clothing is generally pretty vibrant, so if you’re outside in nature you can really combine more than just black, although black always does look very polished without having to put much thought in.

        16. Sherpa Half-Zip, Flare Yoga Pants, and Clogs

This looks really cozy, more cozy than other athleisure outfits we’ve seen. I love the flare yoga pants again, and the sherpa half-zip and the clogs make it feel really warm and fuzzy, like it’s fall or winter, where the objective is staying warm and not necessarily just wanting to be comfortable, even though you definitely are in yoga pants.

Clogs are a great option. I think this would be great for the morning, or if you’re running a quick errand. If not, definitely change the shoe, and you could keep the rest of the outfit athleisure while not necessarily looking like you came out of bed, even though it’s cute for looking like you rolled out of bed if it’s a quick errand.

        17. Muscle Tank, Joggers, and Dad Sneakers

This whole outfit is a good example of combining feminine and masculine in one ensemble. We have a baseball hat, which is great when you’re leaving the house in the morning and your hair isn’t necessarily done. She has a muscle tank, which is a little masculine touch, but definitely not actually a man’s tank top, it’s still cut in a feminine way.

The dad sneakers are chunky and kind of draw the eye to the lighter shoe, because the top is a little darker. The flannel is tied around her waist, which is a good choice here because it draws attention to her waist, and it also seems like it’s a little warm outside. If you actually wore the flannel it would look a bit more masculine and woodsy, rather than tying it around your waist, which is a choice.

The cinched joggers look a little better with this outfit. With the muscle tank, it makes more of a curved line than if you wore straight joggers or straight sweatpants that go straight down, where there would be less of a curve to follow, making it a little frumpier.

        18. Long-Sleeve Crop, Matching Leggings, and Puffer Vest

Here she has a matching set. This is a long sleeve top, which we haven’t seen before, and the shoes are actually the same color as the two other base pieces she’s wearing. I think in athleisure it’s nice to coordinate or match colors to make it look more put together without actually doing more.

Her accessory is the vest, which doesn’t take away from the fact that she’s wearing a completely coordinated outfit underneath. We can still see the color popping out from under the arms, while just breaking it up a little with the sleeveless vest.

        19. Hoodie Dress and Chunky Sneakers

I love the socks here. She could really wear any shoes with this. It’s nice here because the socks are the same color as the shoes, but she could wear a loafer, or a boot underneath the socks, a boot peeping out would be cute, but the tennis shoes are great.

She’s not showing too much skin because of the length of the socks, and it really feels cute and girly. The oversized sweatshirt feels girly too, but it doesn’t feel too put together or like you thought too much about it, because it’s a sweatshirt, even though it’s still a dress.

          20. Oversized Sweatshirt, Ribbed Shorts, and Crew Socks

Here we have another oversized top and biker short combination. I think it always looks good, it always looks so Princess Diana. The crew socks and the ribbed shorts are what to pay attention to here, because the slouchy ribbed socks match the ribbed shorts, and ribbed shorts are a great addition.

They’re kind of hard to find, I feel like I haven’t seen that many of them, but ribbed shorts are cute, especially when you’re not fully seeing them underneath the oversized sweatshirt.

          21. Zip-Up Track Top, Parachute Pants, and Sneakers

This is a great example of an outfit that is athleisure, but not because of the bottoms. We often see sweatpants or leggings as athleisure, but this is more of a track utility pant. She’s wearing an athletic top, and you could put any sort of shirt under there, or even just a sports bra. This tight, small top with big bottoms is always a great combination, and specifically black and army green like this looks great.

The white sneakers are good, I think they make the outfit look a little lighter. You could also go for a darker shoe, but a black shoe might not work as much because of the black top, and army green isn’t the brightest color, so I would stay with a lighter shoe if possible.

          22. Seamless Long-Sleeve, High-Waist Leggings, and Quilted Vest

This is another example of a quilted puffer vest, and underneath she has a matching set like we saw before. Here though, the shoes and socks are matching the vest. I think it looks great and would be an easy, put-together outfit to throw on in the morning.

You could probably change one of the colors of either the top or the bottoms, and it would still look great. Keep either the vest and shoes matching, or the complete set underneath matching, and you could add a different color in there somewhere. I do also like the brown gloves she has, which kind of make it feel less athleisure than the rest of the outfit.

          23. Cropped Tank, Drawstring Sweat Shorts, and Slides

We have a matching top and short here, and then white slides which match the canvas bag. There are no real big accessories except for the canvas bag, which is more of a grocery bag. The slides look good here since it’s such a summery outfit, shorts and a tank.

I do think that if you’re wearing slides, that’s one of the more leisurely parts of an outfit you could put in. Here it’s summery, so it makes sense, but if you’re wearing slides with pants, just know you might have to add something else in the outfit that looks less casual.

          24. Color-Block Windbreaker, Joggers, and Retro Runners

Here we have a color block windbreaker that matches the pants. It adds a lot of color into the outfit while still matching overall, and you don’t have to make this set yourself, it’s just a combination that’s sitting there ready.

Since the jacket already has multiple colors, you have to be intentional about which accessories you’re choosing, especially the colors. Cream matches the cream in her jacket, and the light sage green goes well with the red and the blue. She’s wearing a black shirt underneath, and black is a neutral color that matches the others.

I think the sage green is a good choice, but I would not go with something very bright or more eccentric than sage green. You could maybe do a different blue, a different red, or a neutral like white or black, but the statement here should remain the jogging outfit she has on. When working with a piece, or in this case a set, that is very vintage looking, it’s best not to throw any really bright colors at it, because vintage is already a statement in itself.

          25. Ribbed Bodysuit, Flare Leggings, and Bomber Jacket

Again we have the dark army green, the forest green, with black here, and she also has charcoal and the white and black Air Force 1s. The charcoal bodysuit is great, and the fact that it’s ribbed adds texture where there otherwise isn’t much in this outfit. It’s a bomber jacket that almost has a nylon windbreaker feel, so that’s a different texture too.

The flare leggings are a little bit high-waisted, which is nice with a bodysuit, because it’s not going to move around too much, you don’t have to worry about keeping track of how your bodysuit looks because of the high-waisted pants. I think it’s also nice that the pants go down far enough that we’re seeing a little bit of the white of the shoe, but not too much. It looks like a little pattern of white and black that makes the outfit look more interesting.
