Summer-to-Fall Transition Outfits

The changing of the seasons can set some of us into a panic, scrambling to find appropriate things to wear. Most often, dressing appropriately for fall doesn’t require buying anything new. Most of us have appropriate fall and transition-weather outfits in our closet already.

The key here is wearing light layers, which will keep you warm in the cooler mornings and let you remove them in the warmer afternoon. Here are outfits that transition seamlessly from summer to fall, keeping all of your staples in rotation.

    1. Sleeveless Midi Dress, Denim Jacket, and White Sneakers

A midi dress in sleeveless form is great because it can be appropriate for work with its midi length, while also keeping you cooler without the sleeves. Here she has a denim jacket and white sneakers. This could be perfect for running errands or lunch with your friends.

You could add a different layer on top, like a blazer or a cardigan, for cooler days. Change the shoes and you can take this outfit to work.

    2. Cropped Tank, High-Waist Trousers, and a Lightweight Trench

Here she has a great combination of shoes and belt. I personally would not have thought to put together this brown patent leather with the more rugged black leather, but especially with the bronze belt buckle, it pulls together nicely, along with the lighter brown bag.

We love a beige trench coat, and I’m on the lookout for one. If I had one, I would be pulling it out at the first sign of the weather getting cooler.

    3. Slip Skirt, Fitted Tee, and a Cropped Cardigan

A neutral, almost nude cropped cardigan like this is unexpected and a great piece to have. A neutral outerwear, like the beige trench coat that we saw, is easy to throw on over many different types of outfits. Here the crisp white of the t-shirt and the shoes pair well with the pop of green.

      4. Cotton Sundress with a Lightweight Cardigan and Flats

The dress and cardigan combination is one that works all year round. You can do it in summer, or even in winter. It feels like a traditional combination that you can play around with using accessories.

It feels a little trendier in this situation with the ballet flats, and not completely like she’s milking a cow on a farm.

      5. Denim Shorts, Oversized Button-Down, and Ankle Boots

The oversized button down with the denim shorts is super summery. It feels like you could be sitting at the beach and maybe have a bathing suit underneath.

What pulls this into the fall season is definitely the ankle boots. I like the way she chose a neutral color so as not to take away from the brightness happening on top.

      6. Matching Linen Short Set with Loafers

This is a great summer combination that’s easy to layer on top for fall. I do think loafers can be worn in the summer, but they’re inherently more of a colder weather shoe, fall over winter, because they don’t stand up well in rain or snow.

I could see her having a long cardigan on top. If she’s running out in the morning, it’s a cute way to stay cozy, and a little short set underneath is unexpected.

      7. Tank Dress, Utility Jacket, and Sneakers

This is a cute tank dress. It looks casual and comfortable, and it isn’t ribbed, which is unexpected but works well. Because it isn’t ribbed and isn’t a sweater dress, it shows a little more of what’s underneath, which can be a good thing if you want that look.

If you’re not, the utility jacket is a seamless addition, and little white sneakers just make sense.

      8. Short-Sleeve Sweater, Wide-Leg Trousers, and Mules

The wide leg trousers flare in a really good way here. I like the rise combined with the short sleeve sweater, which is not completely cropped but definitely shorter than her other shirts probably hit.

Individually all of these pieces are light and summery, but together, especially with the long pant, it feels like it could be a fall outfit.

      9. Floral Midi, Cropped Denim Jacket, and Loafers

Here we have another version of the floral midi dress with an over layer and then a closed-toed shoe. The floral midi is a great staple piece for summer, spring, fall, even winter, and we can dress it up or down.

The denim jacket and floral feels very feminine, while the loafer adds a little bit more of a masculine touch.

      10. Linen Shirt, Longline Shorts, and Loafers

Linen is such a hard-working fabric that adds durability to any outfit. It should be used mostly in summer and the beginning of the cooler months, so the transition from summer to fall is a great time. I like that she has it tucked in and cinched at the waist here to add a little bit of curve to an otherwise boxy outfit.

The shorts are a longer length, high-waisted here. They could even be lower-waisted to feel a little bit more youthful and on trend, but high-waisted with a belt is definitely timeless.

        11. Ribbed Tank, Maxi Skirt, and a Light Cardigan

A tiered maxi skirt like this goes great in any color. We often see black and white, but a light sage green is a cute way to add color to an otherwise neutral outfit. She simply added a tank and a light cardigan, and it feels like a transition outfit despite wearing sandals.

I like the sandals, and I could see a variety of other shoes being worn here. If it’s casual, I could almost see a clog, which is transitional summer to fall. Further into fall we could definitely do a loafer with a sock, or even a boot depending on the weather.

        12. Polo Shirt, Pleated Skirt, and Ballet Flats

I love the pleated skirt with the ballet flats. An accordion pleat is so elegant and adds so much structure, interest, and texture without doing anything else. The polo shirt feels sporty and simple, while the accordion pleat is interesting. The ballet flat is dainty and not adding any warmth to the outfit.

She could add a jacket here, maybe a leather, or if it’s casual a denim. If you’re sitting on a rooftop having wine, I would lead more modern with a leather rather than a denim, or even a cardigan, which feels a little bit more relaxed than sleek.

        13. Off-Shoulder Top, Straight Jeans, and Woven Flats

Woven flats feel very summery while definitely making the jump to fall because they’re closed-toed. Here she combines two different woven textures that actually don’t contradict but rather complement each other.

I love an off-the-shoulder top, it adds a little bit of femininity to any outfit without trying too hard or having to think about much. Other than having to wear a strapless bra, she’s still wearing jeans but looks very put together because of the off-the-shoulder.

        14. T-Shirt Dress, Thin Belt, and Low Suede Boots

The t-shirt dress is a versatile piece that deserves more attention. The thin belt does two jobs here: it cinches the waist so her silhouette looks less boxy, and it keeps the dress in place.

With a shorter, looser dress like a t-shirt dress, sometimes I find it rides up a little bit too much. If it’s not too loose, the belt does a good job of making sure the top stays in place, so the skirt isn’t moving around too much, despite wearing a heel.

        15. Sundress, Denim Jacket, and Western Boots

We have another midi dress example here. The western, cowboy boots really make sense with this combination. It feels like you’re waking up on the farm and walking through a field of flowers. I love the woven bag that serves a purpose but also adds texture to the outfit.

She could change out the denim, which definitely works in this situation, but it could be a cardigan. It could also be a leather jacket, but if it were a leather jacket, we would have to change the bag.

        16. Halter Top, Relaxed Trousers, and a Blazer for the AC

This is a professional outfit that’s very chic and definitely warm-weather approved. Despite showing a lot of skin, this would be office appropriate because it’s just the shoulder, it’s not anything in front. If your office is a little bit more traditional, the light blazer on top, especially in a cooler AC office, would pull everything together.

A trouser like this that goes up high, with an oversized blazer and a boxy, oversized look in general, but then the heels pull everything together, so she won’t look like she’s drowning in it.

          17. White Tank, Linen Trousers, and Slide Loafers

This outfit is somewhat similar to the last one, but that helps us see how much a few simple choices make. The loafers rather than the heels add a more walkable, definitely less glamorous feel to the outfit, combined with the choice of tank top.

A simple white tank here, rather than the more substantial ribbed halter neck we saw above, although they’re both somewhat similar in coverage. Here it feels a lot more casual and makes sense for walking around town, but the blazer becomes all the more important if she were to wear this to work.

          18. Sleeveless Mock Neck, Denim Midi Skirt, and Sandals

The denim midi skirt is a great fall piece. It’s definitely cooler-weather coded rather than warmer weather. Denim, despite being in a skirt form like this, does get really hot under bright, warm summer heat.

A sleeveless mock neck is also a great transition-weather piece, or a great layering piece. You could have a sleeveless mock neck under another sweater or a sweatshirt and not get too hot, because of the sleevelessness.

          19. Striped Tee, White Jeans, and a Linen Blazer

These colors work well together. A navy stripe with brown leather is a timeless combination. I love the color of the linen blazer. This beige, light taupe shade suits linen well, and it is a classic linen color, which keeps the look relaxed and easy.

          20. Chambray Shirt, White Jeans, and Espadrille Flats

The chambray shirt is a great combination with the white jeans. They both feel natural and almost like denim, while the bag and the espadrilles also complement each other well. Chambray is really versatile in that it looks almost like denim. It feels as casual as denim, but it’s definitely lighter and not as heat-trapping as a thicker denim would be.

These jeans can also be worn into fall, I think they can be worn past Labor Day. This outfit specifically could be worn past Labor Day, and even if she switched out the top for another one and threw a jacket on top, it would make sense. The most summery part of the outfit is the espadrilles, but even that can be worn into the later months.

If she wanted, she could wear a loafer, or even a riding boot would look great in this situation, a riding boot with a darker denim. You could keep the shirt and the bag and throw a jacket on it. It goes to show how a few quality staples can be mixed and matched and work throughout the year in a variety of different weather situations.

          The Building Blocks

A few pieces that bridge warm days and cooler nights.
