I have seen marriage, laundry, and some dressing room face-offs, and I know that men’s casual outfits are lacking in at least two key areas. First, maybe they are too sloppy. Second, maybe they are a bit too dressed up for buying mulch. Of course the sweet spot is some balance where the clothing has a nice structure and color, and the shoes don’t look like they were selected in an emergency.

I appreciate the instinct, but the least wrinkled thing on the chair is not casual. These outfit ideas are for your weekends, dates, errands, travel days, casual office days, dinners, social gatherings and those really fun ‘come casual’ dress code events.

There are two important elements that can define the success of an outfit: the fabric and the fit. Casual summer clothing will typically be made from natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen, to ensure breathability and moisture wicking. For winter, try a blended wool fabric that will keep you warm without the bulk.

The fit of your clothing is equally as important. If an item is too tight, it can restrict you and be uncomfortable; conversely, if an item is too loose, it can give you an unkempt look. It’s important to find a good middle ground here.

An example of a great casual yet polished outfit is a simple graphic t-shirt with the added touch of a nice blazer on top. Try to look for good quality items that can be worn together in a variety of combinations!

    1. Navy Chore Jacket with Olive Chinos

Navy chore jacket, olive chinos, gray crewneck tee, brown suede sneakers, Saturday farmers market scene (option 1)

With a navy chore jacket, he won’t look like he is going to a quarterly meeting. The olive chinos are ideal for concealing spills from coffee, children, or barbecue sauce. This look is appropriate for errands during the weekend, days of travel, and lunches that are more casual; complete the outfit with a gray t-shirt and brown suede shoes.

    2. Burgundy Henley with Dark Rinse Jeans

Burgundy waffle henley, dark rinse jeans, tan desert boots, cozy pub dinner mood (option 2)

You can wear the burgundy henley as a t-shirt, but it looks nicer and warmer. Dark rinse jeans make the outfit nice enough for dinner, while still feeling like real weekend clothing. It especially solves the ‘nice but not trying’ problem coupled with tan desert boots and a plain leather watch.

    3. Charcoal Hoodie Under a Camel Topcoat

Charcoal hoodie, camel topcoat, black tapered trousers, white leather sneakers, crisp city stroll (option 1)

These are for guys who love hoodies and want to give society a reason to cut them some slack from time to time. The charcoal hoodie and black tapered trousers are about to take the whole look away from gym bag territory. The addition of white leather sneakers is great for smart casual office days, museum visits and dinners when it’s cold.

    4. Rust Overshirt with Washed Black Denim

Rust flannel overshirt, washed black denim, oatmeal thermal tee, dark brown work boots, relaxed brewery afternoon (option 1)

Rust shirts are friendlier than the standard blue shirt. Rust with washed black denim has the advantage of not looking like a garage band castoff. The look is perfect for casual parties, breweries, fall weekends, and is ideal with dark brown work boots and an oatmeal thermal.

    5. Teal Polo with Stone Chinos

Teal knit polo, stone chinos, navy loafers, outdoor casual dinner patio (option 1)

The teal knitted polo is slightly elevated from the basic cotton polos that have been to too many company picnics. The stone chinos keep it light and the navy loafers dress it up for dinner. Great for warmer weather dates, patio dining, and casual Fridays when shorts are just too honest.

    6. Chocolate Suede Jacket with Ecru Tee

Chocolate suede jacket, ecru crewneck tee, indigo jeans, black Chelsea boots, evening sidewalk restaurant scene (option 1)

The jacket is done in chocolate suede, which gives a unique additional texture, and a lot of men’s outfits usually lack that. The ecru t-shirt is a nice contrast but doesn’t draw too much attention. The indigo jeans add an overall more casual vibe to the outfit. This is good for a date, a concert, or a relaxed dinner. I suggest wearing black Chelsea boots with this outfit.

      7. Cobalt Sweater with Gray Wool Trousers

Cobalt crewneck sweater, gray wool trousers, black minimal sneakers, casual gallery opening mood (option 1)

Cobalt looks excellent on men. It gives out lively vibrant energy, but won’t feel costume-y. Pairing this outfit with gray wool trousers is excellent because it means the outfit looks more grown-up, and the black minimal sneakers finish off the look. This outfit is fantastic for casual holiday events, gallery openings, or dinners with friends who appreciate the finer things.

      8. Olive Field Jacket with Striped Tee

Olive field jacket, navy striped tee, faded blue jeans, gum sole sneakers, weekend park walk (option 1)

The olive field jacket is flexible and can be worn many different ways. It can also easily cover up a plain t-shirt. Pair a navy striped shirt with an olive jacket that will give a nice contrast and not make things too complicated. Toss on some worn jeans and gum sole sneakers and you’re set for school runs and dog walks or any Saturday plans!

      9. Black Denim Jacket with Khaki Utility Pants

Black denim jacket, khaki utility pants, pine green tee, black canvas sneakers, casual record shop outing (option 2)

An outfit can be elevated so much more with the addition of a black denim jacket. Black denim jackets add structure to a casual outfit. Take for example utility pants in khaki. They add a bit more interest than chinos and work well with green or blue t-shirts. This type of outfit is appropriate for concerts, record shops, casual bars and ANY setting where wearing a blazer would be considered out of place.

      10. Mustard Cardigan with Navy Jeans

Mustard shawl cardigan, navy jeans, heather gray tee, brown leather sneakers, cozy bookstore afternoon (option 2)

Many would think that mustard would be too bold of a color choice, but paired with a light colored top, the outfit feels more warm than loud. The navy jeans give the outfit some sensible grounding and the light gray top keeps things relaxed so the outfit doesn’t come off as overly tailored.

The outfit works for first dates at the bookstore, coffee runs and even family dinners. It is versatile enough for settings where a hoodie would be a step too casual.

      11. Slate Blue Oxford Shirt with Black Jeans

Slate blue Oxford shirt, black slim jeans, cognac belt, brown leather boots, casual office hallway (option 1)

There are a lot of morning problems that can be solved by a slate blue Oxford shirt. Paired with black jeans, the outfit is more modern and polished than wearing standard blue denim. It’s versatile enough for casual offices and parent meetings, and even dinner afterwards, especially teamed with a cognac belt and brown leather boots.

Beyond color and fit, the addition of accessories can be a defining feature in a casual look. For example, a sleek leather watch and a pair of subtle shades can boost the overall look without being overpowering.

Accessories should serve to enhance the outfit, not steal the show. For leather, think classic and for canvas, think casual, to match the aesthetic of your outfit. Casual looks will go from average to amazing with the right accessories.

      12. Forest Green Sweater with Tan Corduroy Pants

Forest green crewneck sweater, tan corduroy pants, dark brown loafers, autumn dinner at home mood (option 2)

Tan corduroy and forest green are the best colors for fall. They help avoid falling into the seasonal pumpkin aisle. The sweater is a great way to simplify the outfit while the corduroy gives added warmth and texture. This duo also suits cold casual dinners, family gatherings, and relaxed office days. Best finished with chocolate brown loafers.

      13. Brick Red T-Shirt with Charcoal Overshirt

Brick red T-shirt, charcoal twill overshirt, medium wash jeans, gray suede sneakers, casual backyard gathering (option 1)

The brick-red T-shirt is great as it has the color and energy you want without the bright red athletic team vibe. The charcoal overshirt does a little toning down and adds some structure and that is where the magic trick is. It also works for backyard get-togethers and casual cookouts as well as weekend errands when paired with mid-wash jeans and gray suede sneakers.

      14. Navy Knit Polo with Brown Linen Trousers

Navy knit polo, brown linen trousers, woven leather sandals, warm resort dinner mood (option 1)

A navy knit polo is great for warmer weather, because it’s more formal than a t-shirt. If it feels too casual for shorts, brown linen trousers give a relaxed look that’s a bit more dressed up. This outfit can be finished off with woven leather sandals and is great for summer birthdays, vacation dinners and meals by the water.

      15. Plum Sweatshirt with Black Joggers

Plum crewneck sweatshirt, black tapered joggers, cream canvas sneakers, airport travel lounge scene (option 2)

A plum sweatshirt says you have chosen a real travel outfit instead of falling into the travel clothes trap. These joggers are tapered for ultimate comfort, meaning you won’t have to deal with those annoying big puddles of fabric around your ankles. This is the best travel outfit for flights, road trips, and long days of errands, especially when paired with cream canvas shoes and a fresh backpack.

        16. Denim Shirt with Olive Cargo Pants

Medium blue denim shirt, olive cargo pants, tan canvas sneakers, relaxed weekend hardware store run (option 2)

Denim shirts look more sophisticated than other casual button downs and they are more durable. Olive cargo pants (as long as they aren’t pocketed like a fishing vest) are fine. For practical weekends, outdoor activities, or quick trips to the hardware store, you can add tan canvas sneakers to the outfit.

        17. Maroon Bomber Jacket with Gray Jeans

Maroon bomber jacket, gray jeans, black crewneck tee, white low-top sneakers, casual movie night (option 1)

A maroon bomber jacket is a nice way to add some color to your outfit and help define your silhouette. You definitely won’t have to go to a styling seminar for that. Gray jeans are a bit softer than black ones but they are still sharp enough for more formal occasions. This is great for watching movies, casual dates, or drinks and can go well with a black shirt and white sneakers.

        18. Moss Green Quarter-Zip with Dark Denim

Moss green quarter-zip sweater, dark denim jeans, brown hiking-inspired boots, cabin weekend morning (option 2)

This quarter zip may be a little stereotypical ‘dad’ but the mix of moss green and dark denim makes it look at least a little stylish. Knitted or fleeced fabric would work, just avoid overly shiny performance materials, unless he is actually heading into a performance zone. This piece is great for weekends at the cabin, casual work environments, and outdoor brunches with brown hiking boots.

        19. Black Turtleneck with Tobacco Suede Shirt Jacket

Black turtleneck, tobacco suede shirt jacket, dark olive trousers, black Chelsea boots, intimate dinner bar scene (option 2)

A black turtleneck is as dramatic as an espresso machine in its functional and low-volume manner. The tobacco suede shirt jacket adds warmth to the outfit and stops it from being too sleek for actual life. Dark olive trousers and black Chelsea boots complete the look for a date night, winter dinners, or cocktails.

        20. Lavender Button-Down with Navy Shorts

Lavender linen button-down, navy tailored shorts, brown leather sandals, sunny coastal lunch scene (option 2)

Lavender is way more interesting than another pale blue shirt. It gives the outfit purpose without being too over the top. Combined with navy tailored shorts, it is even great for casual parties, lunches, and vacations with some brown leather sandals or clean canvas slip-ons. It is perfect for hot weather.

        21. Charcoal Cardigan with Indigo Chambray

Charcoal cardigan, indigo chambray shirt, olive chinos, brown moc toe boots, casual fall office desk (option 2)

The charcoal cardigan paired with the chambray top resembles an outfit that would be quite fancy. However, it is as comfy as wearing a sweatshirt! The olive chinos add a delightful pop of color and break up the blue and gray tones of the outfit. This look is perfect for relaxed offices, family dinners, or even coffee meetings and can be worn with brown moc toe boots.

        22. Burnt Orange Hoodie with Navy Peacoat

Burnt orange hoodie, navy peacoat, dark gray jeans, brown leather sneakers, cold evening street walk (option 2)

An orange hoodie and navy peacoat combo makes a relaxed and warm outfit that also isn’t boring, which is the trifecta of winter outfits that I love. The peacoat adds some structure and the burnt orange hoodie keeps it casual. It’s a great outfit for running errands in cold weather, casual dinners, or weekend walks in the city, especially when you put on dark gray jeans and some brown leather sneakers.

        23. Sage Camp Collar Shirt with Black Linen Pants

Sage camp collar shirt, black linen pants, tan espadrilles, relaxed summer rooftop gathering (option 1)

For summer gatherings, black linen pants are better than lighter trousers. Sage camp collar shirts have a nice relaxed look. It doesn’t fall into the novelty vacation shirts category. Pair with tan espadrilles and you’re all set for the beach, dinner by the water, warm weather gatherings, or rooftop cocktails.

        24. Deep Purple Flannel with Raw Denim

Deep purple flannel shirt, raw denim jeans, black work boots, casual autumn bonfire scene (option 1)

The dark purple flannel lets you stand out from the crowd of red plaid flannel shirts. The raw denim also adds structure and cleanliness (not sleepy) to the outfit. Combined with black work boots (and a plain tee underneath), this works for bonfires, casual dinners, and fall weekends.

          25. Tan Trucker Jacket with Emerald Tee

Tan trucker jacket, emerald green tee, black chinos, white leather sneakers, weekend brunch sidewalk scene (option 1)

A tan trucker jacket is good for casual occasions, and an emerald tee makes a nicer addition than a plain white t-shirt. The black chinos elevate the fit and color palette making it appropriate for brunch. For daytime dates, easy lunches, and travel days, this look can be completed with white leather sneakers.

          26. Navy Sweatshirt with Burgundy Chinos

Navy sweatshirt, burgundy chinos, gray running-style sneakers, casual Sunday errands scene (option 1)

A navy sweatshirt is pretty simple. However, the color goes nicely with the burgundy chinos. It definitely makes it seem like you put a bit of thought into the outfit instead of just laundry day. You’ll be comfy enough to run errands, yet nice enough for a lunch date. If the day calls for it you can throw on a nice coat and wear gray running sneakers.

          27. Copper Camp Shirt with Dark Green Trousers

Copper camp shirt, dark green relaxed trousers, black sandals, artsy outdoor market mood (option 1)

An understated yet thoughtful combination is copper and dark green. These colors work well in creative casual spaces. The camp shirt increases airflow, while the relaxed trousers elevate the outfit beyond the informality of shorts. This outfit, paired with black sandals or woven slip-ons, will take you to outdoor markets, summer concerts, and casual dinners.

          28. Gray Harrington Jacket with Red Stripe Tee

Gray Harrington jacket, red striped tee, navy chinos, white canvas sneakers, casual weekend museum visit (option 2)

The gray Harrington jacket is clean and simple. It reminds me of paying bills on time. It’s also a good thing because it’s very neat. The red striped tee adds some character to the outfit and also makes it so the outfit does not revolve around the shirt. The outfit works for museum visits and lunch as well as weekend plans when you pair it with navy chinos and white canvas sneakers.

          29. Chocolate Hoodie with Eucalyptus Green Pants

Chocolate hoodie, eucalyptus green drawstring pants, black suede sneakers, relaxed coffee shop work session (option 1)

A chocolate colored hoodie is more purposeful than your average black or gray hoodie, and feels cozier as well. Eucalyptus green drawstring pants add some soothing color to your outfit and the pants are as comfy as you would expect. Finish the look with black suede sneakers. This outfit is great for traveling, working at the coffee shop, or just lounging around on the weekends.

          30. Midnight Blue Shirt Jacket with Rust Chinos

Midnight blue shirt jacket, rust chinos, heather gray tee, brown leather boots, casual dinner with friends (option 2)

This midnight blue shirt jacket is ideal for layering. It’s more relaxed than a blazer but more polished than a hoodie. To brighten the outfit and to add some warmth to the look, I’ve styled a pair of rust chinos. This outfit can be worn to a casual dinner with the addition of some brown leather boots and a heather gray t-shirt.

When considering different outfit combinations, don’t forget about the range of looks supported by different types of shoes. Shoes can either elevate or take down your outfit. For example, loafers can take a pair of chinos to a whole new sophisticated level, while sneakers keep it more casual.

Think about the occasion for the shoes you choose. The right shoes can bring everything together with your outfit. Also, don’t be afraid to buy a few pairs of casual shoes that cost a little bit more, as they will help get dressed for brunch, or even casual Fridays at the office, a lot easier.

Finally, don’t forget about seasonal changes. As the seasons change, so should your clothing. For colder weather, choose clothes made from knit and wool materials, and light, more breathable materials for the summer.

The art of layering helps with the varying temperatures of the day. To stay warm and stylish, pack a light jacket and scarf. Remembering what the seasons are like means you can keep your comfortable outfits looking good all year.
